After much research I purchased the Echomap 50s. I primarily boat on lakes and rivers with an occasional trip to the Outer Banks. When I bought this unit I did not plan on buying a g2 Vision chart. But, after reviewing the current rebate. I would get $200 back and I found the g2 map on Amazon for $180 delivered. So basiclly a $20 discount + a extra map.
I took a 900 mile trip right after purchasing. The unit worked great. I am very happy with the performance. The menus are simple to navigate. On my trip I traveled on the Cumberland & Tennessee Rivers. The depth accuracy was very good. There was a narrow section on the Tennessee river (near Clifton, TN) where the map was not correct, it showed me running on the ground. The rest of the trip it was spot on.
The Echomap 50s replaces my GPSMap 172c which died last year; I can use the transducer from my Echo 100 and eliminate the second unit.
Overall, the unit works very well. GPS performance seems much faster than the 172c. Speed readout is to 0.01kt below 10kt; gives you a good feeling when trimming the sails.
The basemap included with the unit is not very useful. Shop around for the best deal on map chips.
Two slots for map chips is good. We use the unit in a sailboat in Boston and also in a powerboat on the Adriatic in Croatia and would forget to bring the right chip when we traveled. Now I always have it.
It takes two button pushes to get to the map page. The old one went to the map page (if that's where you left it) when powered up. Seems more susceptible to turning itself off when voltage is low (like when starting the engine).
Overall, I am happy with the unit and the price I paid. Last but not least, Hodges Marine did a great job; got it the next day!
