Installed radio and did a radio check with the antenna down, and got a response from 8 miles away.

Happy ICOM M422 VHF Marine Radio Owner |

The first VHF radio I owned was a Uniden. It suddenly stopped working on the water under clear skies. I ordered an ICOM M422 mostly because of a review on the Internet about an ICOM radio outperforming USCG specs as well as their own including heat, temperature, and wet conditions. As the reviewer said, when you need a VHF radio it is usually not under the best conditions and the bells and whistles will not save you, it is a clean communication and maybe with a half dead battery. The first thing I noticed is that it receives WX weather reports in my garage much better and more clearly than the Uniden. I also picked up a radio call on channel 16 from over 10 miles away from inside my garage with the antenna laying flat on the gunwale. The signal was clearer than anything I ever hear from the Uniden. My first impression of the ICOM M422 is very good. I am glad I bought a high quality VHF radio rather than one with a ton of bells and whistles that I would never use anyway.
