I have always had motorguide trollong motors before. They are built rugged and dependable but I had bent the shafts of several which required them to be straightened. The Minnkota shaft is made of a composite material that resists bending. The performance of the Minnkota is equal verses the Motorgides. The place where the Minnkota has the big edge is control by remote control. That is really sweet. I can control the motor from anywhere on the boat. With the auto pilot engaged it is easy to work rods. The AP is affected by wind and wve action and, as a result, not nearly as useful as I had hoped. The built in transducer works OK but experiences intermittant loss of signal. If you get one with the built in transducer, make sure your fishfinder is on the list. Mine wasn't. I have a 2d fishfinder on board to compensate.
